Strategy Edit

Vicious Highwayman holds a particular spot in Stonescar decks when compared to his most direct counterpart, Bandit QueenBandit Queen: while the second is played only in aggro decks and needs a wide board to make the most out of her effect, the first fits more as an anti-aggro unit that relies on continuos removal, making him a viable choice either for aggro decks that want to counter other aggro decks (although less optimal), or for midrange decks.

By himself, Vicious Highwayman is a 4 power Icon req FIcon req FIcon req SIcon req S Charge Charge:
Can attack the turn it is played.
unit with Warcry Warcry:
When this attacks, the top unit or weapon of your deck gets +1/+1.
that deals 1 point of damage on Summon Summon:
Does something when played.
, essentially making him a 5 damage charge unit on his first turn. However, should he be able to trigger his effect, he becomes an almost garanteed 4 damage Lifesteal Lifesteal:
When this deals damage, you gain that much Icon hp.
, with his Quickdraw Quickdraw:
When this kills a blocking unit, the blocker doesn't deal damage back.
making it difficult to trade against him. The easiest way to trigger his effect is, obviously, by killing an enemy unit with his summon. Against aggro decks, this isn't a problem since they mostly run units with low health, like Oni RoninOni Ronin, Grenadin DroneGrenadin Drone, Brazen DaredevilBrazen Daredevil, District InfantryDistrict Infantry and Fearless YetiFearless Yeti. On this note, Grenadin themed decks usually run a lot of 1 health units. Other decks as well feature a good collection of units with 1 health, like Temple ScribeTemple Scribe, Amber AcolyteAmber Acolyte, DawnwalkerDawnwalker, Initiate of the SandsInitiate of the Sands, PyroknightPyroknight, Trail MakerTrail Maker, Dark WispDark Wisp and Stonepowder AlchemistStonepowder Alchemist. Outside of his summon, Vicious Highwayman synergizes well with removal spells typical of both fire and shadow factions, like TorchTorch, AnnihilateAnnihilate, DeathstrikeDeathstrike, ObliterateObliterate and so on.

At the same time, Vicious Highwayman has a wide selection of counters. First of all, he's a 2 health unit that needs to stay alive for multiple turns to make the most out of it. From one side, he's very susceptible to low cost removal like Lightning StormLightning Storm, TorchTorch and VanquishVanquish (because of his 4 attack). From the other, unless his effect was managed to trigger, he dies to any unit with 2 attack or with more than 4 health: low cost units with Aegis Aegis:
Protected from one enemy spell or effect (but not from battle damage).
like Crownwatch PaladinCrownwatch Paladin and Snowcrust YetiSnowcrust Yeti can survive his summon and kill him if he attacks; units with low cost but high health like Combrei HealerCombrei Healer and Sandstorm TitanSandstorm Titan have no issues into stopping him. Against Icon req T decks, a single Xenan ObeliskXenan Obelisk can negate his summon, as every unit will have at least always 2 health. Lastly, Desert MarshalDesert Marshal alone can completely shut him down: his Ambush Ambush:
Can be played to block an enemy attack or at the end of their turn.
, Silence Silence:
Remove all text from a card and its attachments.
and 2 attack will negate Vicious Highwayman even if he managed to activate his effect.

Vicious Highwayman doesn't really synergizes with anything but removal. Because of this, he's mostly played in aggro and midrange Stonescar decks. Alternatively, he can be played into Icon req J and Icon req P variants of Stonescar, the first one to make use of his Gunslinger tribe, the second one to combo him with Haunting ScreamHaunting Scream

Notes Edit

His name is Fred. (Via Scarlatch on Discord)

Fred's last ability can trigger on your opponent's turn (though the Quickdraw probably won't be of much help).
