Strategy

Vicious Highwayman holds a particular spot in Stonescar decks when compared to his most direct counterpart, Bandit Queen: while the second is played only in aggro decks and needs a wide board to make the most out of her effect, the first fits more as an anti-aggro unit that relies on continuos removal, making him a viable choice either for aggro decks that want to counter other aggro decks (although less optimal), or for midrange decks.

By himself, Vicious Highwayman is a 4 power Fire iconFire iconShadow iconShadow icon Charge unit with Warcry that deals 1 point of damage on Summon, essentially making him a 5 damage charge unit on his first turn. However, should he be able to trigger his effect, he becomes an almost garanteed 4 damage Lifesteal, with his Quickdraw making it difficult to trade against him. The easiest way to trigger his effect is, obviously, by killing an enemy unit with his summon. Against aggro decks, this isn't a problem since they mostly run units with low health, like Oni Ronin, Grenadin Drone, Brazen Daredevil, District Infantry and Fearless Yeti. On this note, Grenadin themed decks usually run a lot of 1 health units. Other decks as well feature a good collection of units with 1 health, like Temple Scribe, Amber Acolyte, Dawnwalker, Initiate of the Sands, Pyroknight, Trail Maker, Dark Wisp and Stonepowder Alchemist. Outside of his summon, Vicious Highwayman synergizes well with removal spells typical of both fire and shadow factions, like Torch, Annihilate, Deathstrike, Obliterate and so on.

At the same time, Vicious Highwayman has a wide selection of counters. First of all, he's a 2 health unit that needs to stay alive for multiple turns to make the most out of it. From one side, he's very susceptible to low cost removal like Lightning Storm, Torch and Vanquish (because of his 4 attack). From the other, unless his effect was managed to trigger, he dies to any unit with 2 attack or with more than 4 health: low cost units with Aegis like Crownwatch Paladin and Snowcrust Yeti can survive his summon and kill him if he attacks; units with low cost but high health like Combrei Healer and Sandstorm Titan have no issues into stopping him. Against Time icon decks, a single Xenan Obelisk can negate his summon, as every unit will have at least always 2 health. Lastly, Desert Marshal alone can completely shut him down: his Ambush, Silence and 2 attack will negate Vicious Highwayman even if he managed to activate his effect.

Vicious Highwayman doesn't really synergizes with anything but removal. Because of this, he's mostly played in aggro and midrange Stonescar decks. Alternatively, he can be played into Justice icon and Primal icon variants of Stonescar, the first one to make use of his Gunslinger tribe, the second one to combo him with Haunting Scream and Berserk

Notes

His name is Fred. (Via Scarlatch on Discord)

Fred's last ability can trigger on your opponent's turn (though the Quickdraw probably won't be of much help).
